Comlec Units are an engineering company based in the West Midlands area. They first contacted TeKnow when their IT manager left the company.
Comlec Units have a small network of Windows clients connected to a Linux server, which acts as an internet and email gateway. They also run an application developed in-house which controls most of their business.
TeKnow have supported the existing system and made images of the server in case of a failure. Comlec remain a regular client of TeKnow and have also purchased NEC machines to add to their network from us. We have also added a laptop to the network that uses wireless networking to allow their engineers to update stock records whilst walking around the warehouse.
When we first met Comlec we were surprised to find they were not operating antivirus software. TeKnow successfully implemented a solution and during a 2 week period of scanning the network found over 60,000 infected files!
TeKnow later developed a server side application which automatically downloads virus definition updates and distributes them to the PCs on the network. We chose to do so as Comlec (at this time) only had a 56k internet connection. This allowed us to download the latest virus definitions overnight when bandwidth was at its maximum and distribute to the clients the next morning at logon.
Comlec have been virus free for the last 2 years and they are currently collaborating with both TeKnow and an external Linux specialist in upgrading their servers and certain network clients to secure their business for at least the next 3-4 years.
Comlec are a great example of a company using IT to propel their business forward and give them a competitive edge.
